Issue #2

Standards

The CMA is committed to transforming marketing careers and building confidence. Here is a glance at how we are ensuring marketers are up-to-date, accredited, and informed.

  • The Chartered Marketer program will soon be graduating new designation holders from the course path. Work on the new CM Insights elective continues, with additional content now in development.
  • In-house training proposals have been developed and are currently under consideration by two of our enterprise level members.
  • Updates to the Canadian Marketing Code of Ethics and Standards have been approved by the Board and will be reflected on our website in the weeks ahead.
  • We shared a bulletin providing preliminary draft guidance on Quebec’s privacy law, developed in collaboration with other leading Canadian business associations and privacy law experts.
  • Winning a CMA Award is one of the most noted accomplishments in the marketing community and sets your agency or brand up for future success. The CMA Awards are open for entries until July 22nd in eight categories and nine disciplines. Also enter for free for the Marketer of Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and four Special Awards.

  • We are currently recruiting for the 2022-23 Council term. Apply now if you have 8+ years' experience and are passionate about sharing thought leadership with the Canadian marketing community.

Apply

  • Eight new blogs were recently published from Council thought leaders on a range of topics including: how research and data helps NFP marketing teams, optimizing the last mile of CX, the future of marketing, how to build successful sponsorships, the impact of the right to disconnect legislation on media agencies, brand purpose, and how martech supports growth through partners.

Influence

As the voice of the marketing profession, the CMA actively advocates on legislative and regulatory matters.

Canadian Privacy Legislation

  • In May, we penned an op-ed (published in the Hill Times) on the urgent need for privacy reform, which four other major associations (including the Business Council and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce) agreed to co-sign. We subsequently learned this joint statement had an impact on the government’s decision to table Bill C-27 in advance of Parliament’s summer recess.
  • When the new privacy bill was tabled on June 16th, we were the first association to issue a public statement. Comments from our statement were picked up by CBC and Canadian Press. Before end of day, we had published a new article and members-only preliminary overview. We are now working with our Privacy and Data Committee on our submission on Bill C-27.
  • We are actively seeking members to help develop a response to the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act. If interested, contact Fiona Wilson, Director, Public Policy and Chief Privacy Officer at fwilson@thecma.ca.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • We released our new research report: From Engagement to Retention: DEI’s Impact on the Marketing Profession. The research was well received, resulting in interviews with 680News and The Message as well as coverage in Strategy online, DM Magazine and Marketing News Canada. Our DEI committee has been active and will be using these findings in new work they are planning to roll out beginning this fall.
