Issue at a Glance

Consumer protection is a shared responsibility between federal, provincial, and territorial governments.

The CMA monitors potential changes to consumer protection legislation and provides advice to government on how to ensure a marketplace that protects consumers and enables businesses to be agile, competitive and innovative. We respond to government proposals and initiatives related to a wide range of activities such as loyalty programs, gift cards, unfair practices, contracts and warranties.

Ontario is currently undertaking an in-depth review of its Consumer Protection Act. The CMA participated in the consultation looks forward to continued discussions with the Government of Ontario in this area.

The CMA provides guidance and resources to help marketers comply with laws and best practice in consumer protection.
