Four things you didn’t know about social media

Seminars Social Media

In everyday life, we spend a lot of time on social media.

As a PR and Digital Marketing agency, we spend even more time digging into our clients’ social media pages and working on ways to improve their performance. If you’re a marketing professional, I’m sure you’ve read your fair share of blogs detailing how you can grow engagement, or how TikTok and short form video is taking over social media.

It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come in the world of social media in such a small amount of time. We’ve gone from massive desktop computers and dial-up internet to having the world at our fingertips, on our wrists, in our cars, and well, everywhere! Based on DataReportal’s 2022 findings, the average person spends two hours and 27 minutes on social media per day.

There is a lot of extremely informative content out there. However, it could be fun to take a look at some social media facts you may not be aware of.

The social network of all social networks

The numbers around Facebook continue to be out of this world – or should I say Metaverse? Did you know that Facebook gains about 500,000 new users every day? That translates to six profiles created every second. Out of the 3.96 billion social media users online, about three out of four are active on Facebook.

When it comes to this statistic, we’ll be keeping an eye on Facebook in the coming months and years. For the first time in its history, the social media giant saw a loss in daily users, totaling just under two billion logins a day in its last quarter of 2021.

TikTok is not as Gen-Z dominated as you may think

There is room for everyone on this app. While you can still get in on some viral dance routines, if that’s your jam, TikTok has moved far beyond just catering to the younger demographic. A recent breakdown of TikTok’s U.S. demographics shows that 22.4 per cent of users are between 20-29 years old, and 21.7 per cent are between 30-39 years old. So, if you thought that TikTok had too young of a user base for your business, this is your sign to reconsider!

Tweet tweet, is anyone there?

Well, there are a LOT of tweeters out there. Twitter is one of the largest social media platforms today, but did you know that 92 per cent of all tweets are made by just 10 per cent of users? About 52 per cent of Twitter users in the U.S. visit their feed at least once a day, which indicates that although you may not hear from many users regularly, they’re listening!

A Pinteresting tidbit

Pinterest is a great site for staying on top of trends, finding recipes or creative gift ideas, and so much more. Pinterest has some big-time influence, with 98 per cent of pinners saying they have tried an idea that they’ve found on the site. Some of the most popular days of the year to pin? Valentine’s Day sees a whopping 439 million pins saved, and New Year’s appears to be another popular occasion with 183 million pins saved.

I hope these facts were fun to read through and maybe even opened your eyes to the incredible numbers behind the biggest social media platforms out there! Social media has become such a great resource for brands to leverage for promotion and to build brand awareness. Although sometimes it’s fun to step back and just enjoy it for what it is.

What is your favourite social media platform and why? Did any of these statistics surprise you?
